這是乙個非常非常非常老生常談的問題了，建議題主不要像上乙個答主這麼理解。
這是非常普通的as作準關係代詞的用法，非常常見但市面上不知道有多少奇奇怪怪，五花八門的解釋方法。
than, as, but都有這種用法，非常容易引起困惑。標準形式就是其後面省略了某個成分（不一定是主語）

詳細版：
我們從比較句的省略和倒裝兩個方面來講。
一、比較句的省略
比較句類似並列句，可以省略重複的元素。
我們來看一下比較句的產生過程：
John is excited.
Ted is more excited.
上面兩句話合併之後變成：
Ted is more excited than John (is excited).
括號內是重複的元素，可以省略。
現在來看題主的話：
The insight gleaned from that experience is really as commonplace as was the experience itself.
這句話可以理解為：
The experience itself was commonplace.
The insight gleaned from that experience is as commonplace.
合併之後變成：
The insight gleaned from that experience is really as commonplace as the experience itselfwas (commonplace).
注意這個時候粗體字部分的was不能省略，因為它和主句is時態不同，所以嚴格來說不算重複，但是commonplace重複了，所以可以省略。
二、比較句的倒裝
回到題主這句話，就是為什麼要把was要提到the experience前面？
回答這個問題之前我們先來看下面這句話：
I don't like tea, but shedoes.
這裡的does是一種指代形式，英文叫pro-form，它在這裡所替代的是like tea.
類似的情況發現在題主的這句話中，由於was後面省略了commonplace，你可以把這裡的was也看成was commonplace的指代形式。從修辭上來說指代與被指代的東西如果靠得近，指代會比較清晰，所以was就提到the experience前面，離commonplace更近的地方。

這個時候如果按照正常語序就更怪了不是嗎？was什麼?
